Soul singer Isaac Hayes, the voice of Chef on South Park, is quitting the show, citing the show's "inappropriate ridicule" of religion. Hmmm, is he just catching on to this now? And what exactly would be an appropriate amount of religious ridicule? I enjoy South Park a lot. The joking and jostling between Eric Cartman, Kyle, Stan, Kenny and Tweek seems very familiar to me. Yes, the characters do have potty mouths and can be extremely gross. But because I grew up with so many brothers (they used to have farting contests!), I know very well that boys often are extremely gross.
South Park mocks anything and everything. While the Piss Jesus "art" offends me, the Jesus portrayed on South Park does not. South Park usually mocks not Jesus, but how people (especially his followers) regard and treat him. Big difference! At any rate, South Park has also portrayed and mocked Buddha, Lao Tze, Mohammed (no fatwa issued fortunately), Abraham, and others. Isaac Hayes, a follower of Scientology, apparently took offense when Scientology was mocked. Oh please!
UPDATE * * * * * *
Trey Parker and Matt Stone issued this statement in Daily Variety, related to Comedy Central recently pulling the episode which made fun of Scientology:
"So, Scientology, you may have won THIS battle, but the million-year war for earth has just begun! Temporarily anozinizing our episode will NOT stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies. Curses and drat! You have obstructed us for now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail! Hail Xenu!!!"
I have no idea what this means, and I'm OK with that. I don't want to know.....
