I was sent information on an interesting lecture also at Harvard next week, at the Divinity School. This looks promising!
Emory Law professor Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na’im will discuss his new book, Islam and the Secular State: Negotiating the Future of Shari’a, in the Sperry Room of Harvard Divinity School’s Andover Hall on Thursday March 13 at 5 pm.
Professor An-Na’im, a Muslim and a native of Sudan, believes it is
antithetical to the true teachings of Islam to incorporate Shari’a, the Muslim code of religious law, into state law. To do so undermines Muslims’ spiritual calling to following Shari’a, and inhibits the continuous dialogue among Muslims of how Shari’a should be interpreted. Islam and the Secular State, which has been translated into Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Bengali, French, Persian, Russian, Swahili, Turkish and Urdu and published abroad earlier this year, will be available from Harvard University Press in late March.
WHO: Emory University Law professor Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na’im
WHAT: Discussion of An-Na’im’s new book, Islam and the Secular State: Negotiating the Future of Shari’a
WHERE: Harvard Divinity School – Andover Hall’s Sperry Room
WHEN: Thursday, March 11
5:00 – 7:00 pm.
Will Harvard Islamic Society (HIS) students attend? Curiously, there is no mention of this lecture on the HIS website, not has there been any mention on the HIS e-mailing list. Is Professor An-Na'im too progressive for the HIS?
