Folks who are following the Muhammed Masood case are scratching their heads, wondering why the plea agreement struck between defense attorneys and prosecuting attorneys recommended such a lightweight sentence. Only three years probation for repeatedly lying to federal agents and lying on his visa application? Martha Stewart did jail time for far less. From today's Boston Globe:
"The onetime spiritual leader of a mosque in Sharon admitted yesterday that he repeatedly lied to federal immigration officials from 2002 to 2006 in a bid to obtain a green card, and a federal judge said the guilty plea could lead to his deportation."
"Under a tentative deal disclosed at a hearing in which Muhammad Masood changed his plea to guilty, the former imam of the 1,500-member Islamic Center of New England, would be spared imprisonment but would have to serve three years on probation and pay a $1,000 fine."
"US District Judge Douglas P. Woodlock said he will decide at Masood's sentencing on May 22 whether to accept the agreement or hand down a different punishment for five federal crimes of making false statements and committing fraud in an immigration application."
